Koh Phangan: Thai pulmonologist hit by cocaine-fuelled UK man dies

Associate Professor Theerasak Kaewamatwong, a specialist in respiratory diseases, has died following an accident caused by an Englishman driving under the influence of drugs on Koh Phangan island. The incident occurred on the night of 23 May.

Associate Professor Theerasak Kaewamatwong, a specialist in respiratory diseases, has died following an accident caused by an Englishman driving under the influence of drugs on the island of Koh Phangan.

The accident occurred on the night of 23 May on the island of Koh Phangan, in Surat Thani province. An Englishman riding a motorcycle hit Associate Professor Dr Theerasak Kaewamatwong, known by the nickname Dr Ton, before fleeing the scene.

The practitioner, specialising in pulmonology and intensive respiratory care, was seriously injured. He was rushed to Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok. Investigations revealed that the driver responsible was riding without a licence and had traces of cocaine in his system. He was taken into custody.

On 7 June, Vimut Phahonyothin Hospital issued a message of condolence paying tribute to the doctor’s commitment and dedication. “Throughout his career, he practised with determination and selflessness. His legacy will remain etched in our memories”, the hospital stated.
