A European tourist has posted a video of a 700-baht breakfast in Koh Samui, sparking a heated debate on prices in Thailand’s southern tourist areas.
The post by a European traveller, showing a Koh Samui restaurant offering a 700-baht breakfast, quickly went viral on social media. The menu included an iced Americano, a health drink, eggs and several sides.
In the caption, the tourist wrote: “The realisation when heading to southern Thailand.”, noting that while Thailand is often seen as a budget destination, prices in the south’s tourist zones can be markedly higher.
The post prompted numerous reactions, ranging from surprise to measured responses. Some users felt the price was reasonable, while others advised choosing establishments frequented by locals.
“It’s still relatively affordable, but compared with northern Thailand and Vietnam the difference is noticeable. I’d still recommend going—it’s a beautiful place.”
The video’s author later clarified that the intention was not to criticise Thailand, but simply to highlight a difference in pricing between the north and south of the country.
