The "Protect Phuket" collective is organising a peaceful demonstration in Patong to denounce certain tourists' incivilities and demand respect for Thai laws.
The Protect Phuket group, led by Saichon Nuchet, submitted a request for authorisation to Patong police on 24 August. The demonstration is scheduled for 28 August at Loma public park, opposite Patong Beach.
The organisers wish to highlight the difficulties faced by residents and traders in the face of certain tourist behaviours deemed disrespectful. They are calling for more harmonious coexistence between residents and visitors.
The local authorities have given their approval, provided the gathering remains peaceful and strictly within the legal framework. The police specifically asked the organisers not to display Palestinian flags.
According to Saichon Nuchet, at least 500 people, traders and residents, are expected to take part. The event will unfold in two parts: a first section devoted to residents' testimonies, followed by a round-table discussion with local authorities.
The group was created in response to recurring complaints about certain tourists, notably Israeli and French, accused of behaviour ranging from non-payment for meals to brawls and nuisances linked to dangerous group driving.
Saichon Nuchet stressed that the collective does not stigmatise any nationality and is simply demanding the firm application of Thai laws to all offenders.
