A Thai man aged around twenty-six opened his handcuffs and fled behind the Koh Samui courthouse, according to the police.

The Bo Phut police have issued a search notice after the escape of a detainee during his transfer to the Koh Samui court. The man, a Thai in his twenties, slim, with tanned skin, long hair and wearing jeans, is said to have removed his handcuffs before disappearing behind the courthouse.

“Urgent. A detainee has opened his handcuffs and fled during his transfer to the Koh Samui court in an assault case. Thai man, slim, tanned skin, long hair, long jeans, around 26 years old. Escape behind the Koh Samui courthouse.”

On social media, the official post sparked a flurry of ironic comments. Several users compared the fugitive to a “film wizard”. Others mocked the state of the equipment: the handcuffs are said to be “worn out”, due to a lack of budget to replace them. One reader asked whether the man is Thai or Burmese; the police account replied clearly: “Thai.”

Locals are calling for tighter checks at the island’s entry and exit points. Others reckon the escape will not last long: the island is small, the prison is nearby, and the fugitive, in jeans, “won’t get far”. At the time of publication, there was no indication he had been recaptured.
