A violent road accident claimed the life of a young man on 3 October in Koh Samui. Recent rains have made the island's roads particularly dangerous.
A tragic accident occurred on 3 October on the island of Koh Samui, in the Chaweng area. A pick-up violently skidded on a road made slippery by heavy rains, before hitting an obstacle. The scene, filmed by a surveillance camera, clearly shows the vehicle's loss of control.
The driver, a young man named Ek, originally from Chaweng and only son of a local entrepreneur, did not survive the impact. According to information circulating locally, he is believed to be the only fatality in this accident.
A scooter was also nearby at the time of the incident. Its rider, a young relative of the victim, suffered minor injuries (grazes to the arms and legs) and was hospitalised for observation. He is now recovering well.
Weather conditions play a major role in this type of accident. With the monsoon rains, the roads of Koh Samui quickly become slippery, especially in urban and tourist areas such as Chaweng. The authorities remind drivers of the importance of strictly observing speed limits, both for cars and, even more so, for scooters and motorbikes, which are particularly vulnerable on wet roads.
