On Sunday, March 15, late in the afternoon, emergency services on the island of Koh Samui were mobilised for a particularly challenging intervention at the famous Bang Kun Si waterfall, located in the centre of the island.
A young Burmese worker who was accompanying his family, in his twenties, fell fatally from a slippery rocky promontory, likely due to wet vegetation and recent rains that make the surroundings of the waterfall extremely dangerous.
Alerted late in the afternoon, rescuers had to wait until nightfall to precisely locate the body, which was stuck in a deep and steep ravine at the foot of the waterfall. The operation, conducted in total darkness, required the joint intervention of tourist police, professional rescue units and many local volunteers.
After several hours of intense efforts, the body was finally extracted and handed over to the authorities for the usual formalities and repatriation to the family. No other person is believed to have been involved in the accident.
Local authorities once again remind everyone of the high risks associated with visiting Koh Samui waterfalls during the rainy season: slippery trails, unstable rocks and reduced visibility in the evening. Several fatal or serious accidents have already been recorded in recent years at the island’s natural sites.
