In response to the smell of decomposing waste polluting parts of the island, Koh Samui residents went to the municipal incinerator site to demand immediate measures and sustainable solutions.
Around fifty residents went yesterday to the incinerator and landfill site in Koh Samui. They met with local authorities to denounce the foul odour caused by the mountains of accumulated waste.
Following discussions, the participants secured a concrete commitment: improving the formula of the micro-organisms sprayed on the waste piles to better neutralise the odours. At the same time, residents decided to create a waste management group at source for long-term action.
The situation remains critical. According to recent reports, nearly 200,000 tonnes of waste are accumulating on the island, while the municipal incinerator operates below capacity (when it operates). Every day, 150 to 160 tonnes of additional waste are produced, worsening the odour problem and the saturation of storage sites.

The photos taken on site illustrate the scale of the issue: vast metal warehouses housing mountains of waste, excavators in action and piles of rubbish stretching as far as the eye can see.
Residents hope this mobilisation marks the start of genuine collective awareness and concrete action, both on odour treatment and on reducing waste at source.
