The Thai Ministry of Transport aims to strengthen the tourist appeal of the south of the country. It proposes establishing direct flights from China and Europe to Surat Thani Airport, while developing a seamless baggage transfer system to Koh Samui.
These measures aim to ease congestion at Bangkok's airports, simplify travel for international visitors and better distribute economic benefits to the southern provinces.
Surat Thani targeted for international routes
Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit chaired a meeting with Suparerk Thongsuk, president of the Koh Samui Tourism Association, to accelerate the opening of these air routes.
The new routes would allow travellers from key international markets to access the region directly, while easing pressure on the capital's airports.
Simplified baggage transfer to Koh Samui
The ministry also plans to implement a seamless baggage transfer system between Surat Thani Airport, the ferries and hotels on Koh Samui.
Passengers could thus head directly to the maritime terminal while their luggage is processed, sorted and delivered to their final destination.
The Department of Airports has been tasked with quickly engaging in discussions with airlines, immigration services and private operators to realise these projects.
