After more than 250 days at sea in deplorable conditions, the US Navy is offering its personnel a stopover in Pattaya to rest and forget the deprivations aboard the aircraft carrier.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier « USS Abraham Lincoln » and two escort ships are due to arrive at the port of « Laem Chabang », near Pattaya, from 2 to 6 September. Around 5,000 sailors and Marines will finally be able to set foot on land after an exceptionally long deployment in the Middle East.

The ship left San Diego in November 2025. Its mission, extended as part of operations against Iran, lasted more than 250 days without a proper stopover. Accounts from families and sailors, widely reported in the United States, describe appalling living conditions: rationed meals, no fresh produce or milk for months, blocked toilets, mouldy showers, shortages of soap and toothpaste, and morale at rock bottom.

American lawmakers have even questioned the Pentagon over reports of exhaustion and suicide attempts. The Thai stopover is therefore not a military exercise, as the Royal Thai Navy has made clear. It is solely to allow the crews to rest and resupply.
The mayor of Pattaya, Poramet Ngampichet, said the city is ready to welcome the servicemen. Local traders anticipate a windfall of 5 to 15 million baht. For the US Navy, this break in Pattaya is clearly a gift intended to soothe troops at the end of their tether after months of deprivation.
Pattaya is no random choice of destination. It offers the sailors what the aircraft carrier has long denied them: a little freedom, comfort and relaxation.
The USNAVY command is probably hoping that these few days ashore will be enough to make them forget the difficult months spent at sea.
