A landslide struck a villa on the heights of Koh Samui on Monday without causing any injuries, as local authorities warn of the increased risk linked to waterlogged soils.
The phenomenon occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, on the heights of Lamai, in the tambon of Maret, on the island of Koh Samui, in the province of Surat Thani.
Municipal officials sent to the scene attributed the incident to persistent rainfall that saturated the soil. A concrete fence and part of the villa were damaged, but no injuries were reported.
The authorities nevertheless warn of the possible increase in such events, particularly around recent constructions where the soil has been recently disturbed.
« Residents of high-lying areas must remain vigilant in the face of the risk of landslides, as rainfall is set to continue on the southern tourist island in the coming days », said Panlop Meepian, head of legal affairs for the Koh Samui municipality.

The meteorological department forecasts heavy rainfall in several southern regions between Tuesday and Sunday, due to a south-easterly wind that is also affecting the central plains, the East and the Gulf of Thailand. The authorities urge caution in low-lying areas and slopes near waterways, owing to the risk of flash floods and run-off.
