The Suwon court has sentenced the owner of a factory to three years in prison for inserting a compressed air gun into the anus of a Thai worker, causing him serious internal injuries.

The Suwon District Court handed down this sentence to a man in his sixties, manager of a metal cleaning factory located in Hwaseong, about sixty kilometres south of Seoul. He was found guilty of aggravated assault and violation of the labour standards law.

The incident dates back to 20 February last, when the man is accused of inserting an industrial air gun into the anus of a Thai worker in his forties and releasing high-pressure air for about seven seconds.

The victim suffered a rectal perforation of about ten centimetres and had to undergo emergency surgery. The boss denied any intention to harm, claiming it was a simple joke.

The court took into account, in determining the sentence, the fact that the boss had deducted the medical expenses from the victim's salary and had shown no remorse despite the severity of the injuries inflicted.

However, the court acquitted the boss's wife, who was prosecuted for intimidating the Thai worker by implying that he could be reported as an illegal immigrant and deported.
