A surveillance video of an expat striking a Thai woman in a Koh Samui bar has sparked outrage and calls for his expulsion.
A security camera video, published on Facebook with the comment « Who is this man? Hitting a woman is unforgivable! », quickly went viral on social media. It shows a Dutch expat managing a bar in the Bangrak area striking a Thai woman repeatedly in a bar on Koh Samui, sparking a wave of indignation.
According to reports, the altercation took place on the night of 29 August in an establishment in Plai Laem. The man, identified by several internet users as Dutch, strikes the woman who falls to the ground. He then grabs a metal stool before those present intervene. The victim went to Koh Samui hospital where a bruise to the left cheekbone was noted.
On social media, the protagonist’s name spread quickly. Several comments identify him as Marc, owner of the « Grasshopper Bar » in Bangrak. Numerous messages demand his expulsion: « Get him out of Thailand! », « Send him back to where he’s from » or « Put him in jail then deport him ». Other users criticise the men present for holding back the woman rather than the aggressor.
The woman filed a complaint, but she claims no progress has been made in the investigation, which led her to make the matter public. Comments remain divided: some believe she struck the first blow, others emphasise that she was defending herself against an aggressive and intoxicated man.
