A fight between taxi drivers broke out in front of the entrance to Koh Samui Airport. The video, shared on Facebook, was quickly removed under pressure from influential families on the island.
A video shared yesterday shows two men fighting with punches in a style reminiscent of Muay Thai, in the middle of the night in front of the entrance to Koh Samui Airport. According to comments and share captions, it appears to be a dispute between taxi drivers for control of customers:
In the footage, the two protagonists exchange heavy punches, without really using the kicks or knees typical of Muay Thai. Witnesses, including tourists, watch the scene without intervening. Comments under the posts speak of a local rivalry for fares, a recurring problem on the island, especially around the airport.
The original poster said they had deleted the video in order to “protect Samui’s reputation” and avoid fuelling the tensions linked to the island’s economic interests. This decision was immediately welcomed by several members of influential island families.
“Please delete the post. I ask everyone to exercise great discretion. Koh Samui offers many advantages, but its reputation also suffers.”
Several users regret this censorship, believing that taxi fights damage Koh Samui’s tourist image more than the videos themselves. Others point out that, for once, the protagonists fought “fairly” rather than resorting to weapons, as has happened in past incidents on the island.
At this stage, no official police intervention or statement has been made public regarding the incident.
